ANATONE - There were no highway closures in Asotin County as a result of this weekend’s storm, but for the Washington Department of Transportation crews headquartered in Clarkston there was plenty of work to be done on county and other rural roads.

Maintenance Supervisor Ronnie Mock said crews had been out in full force for the last couple of days, nearly working around the clock.

"We've had, over late last week and last weekend, some pretty substantial amounts of snow," said Mock. "Mostly south of here and the Anatone area, some over the top of the Alpowa."

Mock said what to do with the snow being removed was an issue for DOT personnel.

"We've been trying to keep it plowed back," Mock said. "When we run out of room to store snow on the side of the road we have to remove it and take it somewhere else where we have more room, where we can get it over the side of the road."

Now that the roads are plowed, Mock said crews would keep an eye on the weather and maintain the progress they have made.

"We just have to keep monitoring when the wind picks up and starts filling it back up with snow," he said. "We need to take our heavier equipment, such as graders with wing plows, and try to wing the snow back to get it away from the road. When we get slick areas from where the snow is blowing across there and sticks, we have to de-ice and keep the traction better for the public."
