Idaho County Sheriff's deputy shot in alleged home invasion

By Greg Meyer

KOOSKIA - An Idaho County Sheriff's deputy was shot Wednesday night after an intruder allegedly forced his way into the officer's home.

It happened a little after 6 p.m. According to the Idaho County Sheriff's Office, they received a phone call from a deputy's wife advising that her husband had been shot and that a suspect, who had also been shot, was in custody.

Corporal Jim Gorges, was on-duty in his home 9 miles up Kidder Ridge outside of Kooskia. The suspect knocked on the door, and as Gorges answered the door, the suspect allegedly pushed the door in and fired a shot. Corporal Gorges returned fire, and hit the suspect.

Gorges sustained a gunshot wound to his right forearm. He was treated at Clearwater Valley Hospital and released. His family was at home at the time of the incident, but none were injured.

The suspect is 40-year-old Douglas G. Wood of Kamiah. He was taken to Clearwater Valley Hospital, with a gunshot wound to his chin and chest. He was later transferred by ambulance to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. A warrant for his arrest has been issued, and upon his release from the hospital, he will be taken into custody.

The Sheriff's Office received information that prior to this incident, someone picked up Wood and gave him a ride approximately 2 miles up Glenwood Road, dropping him off near Corporal Gorges' residence.

If anyone has any knowledge of this they are asked to contact the Idaho County Sheriff's Office at (208) 983-1100.

The incident is being investigated by the Idaho State Police.

The Idaho County Sheriff's Office is thanking other agencies for their assistance, especially the Lewis County Sheriff's Office, the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office and the Nez Perce Tribal Police for their quick response.
