LEWISTON - A fire ripped through a North Lewiston trailer in the 500 block of 24th Street late Thursday afternoon, but fire officials said it could have been worse.

The fire broke out around 4:00 p.m. Battalion Chief Bernie Sander said the blaze started in the bathroom and quickly spread to the hallway.

A woman and her son were home at the time, but both got out safely.

Sander said containment was a concern because trailers in the area are so close together. But he said early detection and response helped firefighters put out the flames quickly.

Sander said there is significant damage to the walls and ceiling of the trailer, and major smoke damage throughout. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
