The gas explosion severely damaged the Moscow apartment building.

MOSCOW, ID - The University of Idaho lends a helping hand to one of its own in the form of a fundraiser following a recent tragedy.

Early Thursday morning a gas explosion severely damaged a Moscow apartment building, leaving one person with a minor injury and many tenants without a home or basic necessities. Moscow Fire officials responded to a gas explosion in the attic of a two-story apartment building on Blaine Street.

The University of Idaho is currently hosting a fundraiser for a non-traditional student and their family, who resided in the building.

"The family is beyond appreciative--it's been amazing. They're so thankful and I'm just really glad that I'm in a position to help them and that the community can help them," said fundraiser organizer Natona Davi.

"There was a lot of fire and a significant amount of charring in the attic and it is still a mystery as to what caused the explosion," said Moscow Fire Chief Ed Button.

The investigation is ongoing. Fire officials don't have an estimated cost of damage and believe the building will have to be demolished. To donate items call the University of Idaho at (208) 885-6676 or email Davi at ndavi@uidaho.edu.
